Selma Skenderović (2001) is a master’s student of Slovenian language and comparative literature, a translator, president of Young PEN Slovenia, and editor of the literary magazine Mentor. She publishes poetry and prose on various platforms and in anthologies, including Poetikon, Kralji ulice, and Vrabec anarhist. She participates in intercultural and international projects that encourage the public to show greater tolerance toward foreigners, such as Intercultural Coexistence, the Initiative for Foreign Students, and the international cross-border meeting Forum Tomizza.
As the youngest author, she won the Urška Festival of Young Literature in 2020 at the age of 19. A year later, her debut short story collection Why Are You Silent, Hava? was published, and it has been translated into several languages. In 2020 and 2021, she received the Blisk award for the best poem. In 2022, the Public Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Books (JAK) selected her debut book for the Readers of Europe project; that same year, she was nominated for the Peace Award, and her book was nominated for Best Literary Debut. In 2023, she received the award for Best Young Author at the Sarajevo Book Fair.
Her first book is included in the European project Story Valley, which encourages young people to explore and revive stories from different cultures and to address issues of migration. In 2024, her novel And If Everyone Forgets was published by Cankarjeva založba. In 2025, JAK selected the novel for translation at the 15th International Seminar of Slovenian Literature. The author was also featured on Forbes’ 30 under 30 list, which highlights exceptional individuals under 30 who push boundaries in various fields with their ideas, work, and achievements. For Cankarjev dom, she curates and leads a series of conversations on immigrant literature in Slovenia titled Who’s Writing There Anyway.
