Tuly Salumu (1988) is a novelist and journalist. Her debut novel, Bintje [Bintu], is a tragic coming of age of a mixed girl with Congolese roots in the Belgian suburbs. Centered around the themes of love, domestic violence, racism, addiction and motherhood, Bintje was published in 2023 and applauded by national newspapers De Standaard en De Morgen. Her concise and direct language has been compared to the style of Edouard Louis. Since the publication Salumu has become an appreciated essayist and columnist for various publications. Her essay Gezocht: de zwarte genen van mijn witte zoon [Looking for my white son’s black genes] was nominated for the Joost Zwagerman Essay Prize. She is currently working on her second book, a novel about romance, religion and neurodiversity.
