Barbara Woźniak

Barbara Woźniak is a writer and scholar based in Kraków, Poland. She is the author of Niejedno, published in 2021, for which she received the Witold Gombrowicz Literary Award, one of the most important literary awards for Polish literature, as well as the Kraków UNESCO City of Literature Award.

Niejedno tells the story of a year in the life of Szymon Kowalski, a lecturer in bioethics, who takes care of his father diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease; at the same time Szymon developes a syllabus of an academic course dedicated to medicine in the Third Reich (Euthanasia Program and Aktion T4).

Barbara also publishes short stories and essays. She is the recipient of a scholarship from the International Visegrad Fund. Occasionally, she teaches writing for the Kraków UNESCO City of Literature Writing Course.

Barbara graduated from the Faculty of Philosphy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. She holds PhD in social science. She is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Jagiellonian University Medical College and a researcher at the Center for Research on Cultural Discourses of Illness at the Faculty of Polish Studies, Jagiellonian University.
