Barbara Woźniak

Barbara Woźniak is a prose writer and scholar based in Kraków. Her debut novel Niejedno was published in 2021, for which she received the Witold Gombrowicz Literary Prize, one of the most important literary awards in Poland, as well as the Kraków UNESCO City of Literature Prize. The story of Niejedno takes place during an academic year when Szymon Kowalski, a lecturer in bioethics, begins to take care of his father who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease; simultaneously, he works on the syllabus of a course dedicated to medicine in the Third Reich (Euthanasia Program and Aktion T4).

Barbara also publishes short prose and essays. Occasionally, she teaches writing for the Kraków UNESCO City of Literature Writing Course.

Barbara is currently an assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine, and a researcher at the Center for Research on Cultural Discourses of Illness at the Faculty of Polish Studies, Jagiellonian University.
